The Shanghai WooliesLast Festival Performance: 2009 Two guitars, three horns, drums, string bass and Mel, the singer girl. Gavin Bondy (trumpet player of Pink Martini) leads. Don’t be afraid. Sit right up next to the stage. Yes, that’s right...
The Shanghai Woolies are an eight-member band led by Gavin Bondy (of Pink Martini fame.) They play hot music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Harry James, and others. With a variety of moods, they break conventions as they tromp through the rebellious, inventive, mysterious, and scandalous sounds of the twenties; the exciting, romantic, and colorful sounds of the thirties; and the energetic and beautiful sounds of the forties, From a purist yet postmodern viewpoint, the Shanghai Woolies combine both traditional and new elements to conjure the flavors of the original idea for an extremely diverse audience. Care to dance? A Charleston, perhaps?
